National chess outfit bags 1 draw, 1 win in Round 2

TEHRAN, Sep. 04 (MNA) – Iranian men chess players drew their game while the women squad were the victors in Round 2 of the 42nd World Chess Olympiad underway in Baku.

Round 2 competitions of the 2016 World Chess Olympiad took place in Azerbaijan’s capital where the Iranian female representatives came out ahead of Singapore 3-1.

Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, Atousa Pourkashian, Ghazal Hakimifard as well as Homa Alavi competed for Iran’s women team.

Male chess players of Iran, however, only managed to draw against their powerful Georgian rivals 2-2. Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Parham Maghsoodloo, Shahin Lorparizanganeh, Alireza Firouzja represented Iran in Men’s section while Maghsoodloo’s victory over Mikheil Mchedlishvili could hold Georgia to a draw.

Men’s squad of Iran will take on Greece in the third round while women chess players of the country are scheduled to meet up Latvia in Round 3.

The 42nd World Chess Olympiad began on Friday September 02 at the Baku Chrystal Hall with 180 teams competing in the Open Section, while the Women Section has 140 teams participating.
