Iranian supertanker, giant MSC boxship collide in Singapore Strait

TEHRAN, Aug. 05 (MNA) – An Iranian supertanker collided with a container ship in the Singapore Strait on Thursday night, with no loss of life or pollution despite damage to both vessels, Singapore transport officials said.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore says it was notified just before midnight that the VLCC Dream II and the MSC Alexandra containership had collided in the Singapore Strait about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) southeast of Sebarok Island.

The 319,999 DWT Dream II is owned by Iran’s National Iranian Tanker Company and was built in 2008.

The MSC Alexandra is owned by Geneva, Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company and was built in 2010. The vessel has a TEU capacity of 13,998 and measures nearly 396 meters in length. AIS data shows the ship had just departed Singapore for Chiwan, China.

After the collision, the MPA and MSC said, a number of container boxes fell into the sea, and others landed on the deck of Dream II.

MPA said separately Dream II sustained damage to its bow, adding that both vessels were safely anchored in Singapore.

The Singapore Strait, one of the world’s busiest commercial shipping routes, is a 105-km long, 16-km wide passage between the Strait of Malacca to the South China Sea.
