FIDE president arrives in Iran

TEHRAN, Jul. 10 (MNA) – President of World Chess Federation (FIDE) has arrived in Iran to open two major sportive events to be held in Bandar Anzali and Tehran.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the 54-year-old Russian President of World Chess Federation, has travelled to Iran at the official invitation of Iran Chess Federation to serve as a special guest at opening ceremonies of the 1st Chess Stars Cup as well as the 12th Asian Schools Chess Championships.

The 1st Chess Stars Cup will be competed in Bander Anzali Free Zone, Iran from July 9th to 21st. The World team will comprise 13 Grandmasters including Sargissian Gabriel, Dreev Aleksey, Short Nigel D, Sokolov Ivan, Edouard Romain, Miroshnichenko Evgenij, Lu Shanglei, Mchedlishvili Mikheil, Vakhidov, Jahongir and Ehlvest Jaan. Meanwhile, the Iranian squad will consist of Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Pouya Idani, Pouria Darini, Amirreza Pourramezanali, Parham Maghsoodloo, Alireza Firouzja, Shahin  Lorpari Zangeneh, Aryan Gholami, Sarasadat Khademalsharieh as well as Seyed Khalil Mousavi.

The 12th Asian Schools Chess Championships is also scheduled to open today in the Iranian capital of Tehran and will last until July 18.

Iran, China, Iraq, India, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, New Zealand, Singapore, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Syria, Nepal and Tajikistan will deploy chess players to the Asian tournament.

In addition to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the Russian world champion Anatoly Karpov will also attend the distinguished event.
