Iranian judokas fail at Baku Grand Slam

TEHRAN, May 08 (MNA) – Iran's four-member national judo team lost to rivals failing to bag medals at 2016 Judo Grand Slam in Azerbaijan Republic.

On the final day of the second Grand Slam of the 2016 IJF World Judo Tour is underway in Azerbaijan’s capital city of Baku where Iran’s Javad Mahjoub at -100kg struck an off draw in the first round before he overcame the Australian rival in 52 seconds by technical fall on road to the second round.

In his second encounter, Mahjoub conceded a defeat against Georgian judoka Beka Gviniashvili, the 2013 and 2015 World Junior Champion and European Junior Champion in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Meanwhile, the other Iranian judo practitioners at the tournament comprised Alireza Khojasteh, Saeid Molaei and Saeid Moradi who had all dropped out after losing to rivals in the first round.

The 2016 IJF World Judo Tour has attracted 448 judokas of 72 countries while medal winners at the event will be awarded by prize money as the gold, silver and bronze winner will receive 5000, 3000 and 1500 US dollars, respectively.

It is noteworthy that the 2016 Judo Grand Prix to be held in Almaty of Kazakhstan on May 13-15 marks the last chance for Iranian judo practitoners to secure Judo spots at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
