Russia, US to join efforts on truce control in Syria

MOSCOW, May 04 (MNA) – Russian FM Sergei Lavrov assured that his country and US will create a joint center in Geneva, Switzerland, to monitor the enforcement of the truce in Syria during a press conference on Tuesday.

Speaking with journalists along with the UN special envoy to the Arab country, Staffan de Mistura, Lavrov explained that in this operation of permanent military character of one and another side, will both sit 'at the same table', to preserve the ceasefire and prevent its violation.

The head of Kremlin diplomacy thanked the UN for its logistical support in the creation of this new center, and stressed that with its opening the efficiency of the Russian-American effort for the pacification of Syria will be greater.

Lavrov called this result a great step for better coordination of actions of Moscow with Washington and the international coalition he leads.

The minister explained that the efforts of both sides are aimed at increasing the number of participants in the regime of ceasefire, to extend this truce and consolidate it.

On the current epicenter of the violent actions of terrorists in Syria, the city of Aleppo, Lavrov said that Moscow and Washington are finalizing an agreement on a possible halt to the clashes that could begin 'in a few hours', as he expressed.

For his part, De Mistura said that if Aleppo joins the ceasefire the Geneva peace talks could be resumed.

Moscow and Washington also negotiated on April 29 a new ceasefire in Lattakia and Damascus, which took effect last Saturday with both parties as guarantors of its compliance by all sides, and intended to be effective until Tuesday midnight.
