UN warns on fragility of ceasefire in Syria

NEW YORK, Apr. 30 (MNA) – The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, Stephen O'Brien, described as very worrying the recent escalation of violence in Syria, which threatens the ceasefire that entered into force two months ago.

According to O'Brien, there are reports of increasing violence in Aleppo, Homs, Idlib, Lattakia and Damascus.

During a video conference with the Security Council, the Under-Secretary-General urged to make all possible efforts to stop the fighting and to ensure humanitarian access to the victims of the crisis.

He also asked to seize the opportunity to find a political solution.

The UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura also expressed concern over the recent events.

De Mistura emphasized the urgent need of respecting the ceasefire, in order to have a favorable environment for negotiations.
