Intl. Pahlavani Wrestling Federation opens

TEHRAN, May 02 (MNA) – Following measures taken by Iranian Wrestling Federation as well as the approval of United World Wrestling, the International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation was established.

International Olympic Committee of United World Wrestling (UWW) had previously communicated certain policies pertaining to the development and management of traditional wrestling styles on the part of national federations with the aim of adding these traditional form to the list of Olympic events along with freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines.

Accordingly, the Iranian Wrestling Federation, in collaboration with a number of national federations, held International Pahlavani Wrestling tournaments in the years 2015 and 2016.

Furthermore, the Iranian organization made international consultations managing to register the International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation to take advantage of the provided opportunity to enroll Pahlavani Wrestling, as the most noble Iranian wrestling style, in the Olympics.

Given that the acceptance of any sort of traditional wrestling by the UWW is conditioned to the formation of its international federation, the UWW, which comprises a series of global and national federations active in Olympic and traditional wrestling, has placed Pahlavani wrestling program in its annual calendar approving of the collaboration with the traditional wrestling discipline.

Therefore, the first Pahlavani Wrestling World Championship will be held in Belarus in October, 2016 under the auspices of the United World Wrestling.

The origin of Pahlavani wrestling goes back to ancient Persia and was said to have been practiced by mythological Iranian heroes in battles. In fact, the Pahlavani wrestling originally used to train warriors as it combines martial arts and wrestling technics, calisthenics, strength training and epic music.

It is recognized by UNESCO as among the world's longest-running forms of sport.
