Zarif meets Azeri president in Baku

TEHRAN, Apr. 07 (MNA) – Iranian FM Zarif who is in Baku for trilateral meeting of Foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan met with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday.  

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammdad Javad Zarif, who is visiting Azerbaijani capital city of Baku, met with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, on Thursday, to discuss bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

The Iranian official is in Baku to share the table with his Russian and Azeri counterparts Sergey Lavrov and Elmar Mammadyarov, respectively. The trilateral meeting was agreed upon in during Aliyev’s visit to Tehran in late February and is hoped to contribute to regional cooperation of the three countries.

During the meeting Zarif conveyed the warm greetings of President Rouhani to Ilham Aliyev and restated that Iran is determined to develop ties with all its neighbors including Azerbaijan.

The chief of Iran’s diplomacy, moreover, voiced his satisfaction with the growing status of Tehran-Baku ties under the presidency of Ilham Aliyev.

 The south-north rail corridor is one of the major joint projects of Iran and Azerbaijan, reiterated Iranian top diplomat saying that tourism, energy, fight against terrorism, and cooperation within regional and international organizations can also be improved.

Voicing content with good relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev, for his part, referred to many grounds of commonalities between the two countries and the same determination to bolster ties shared by the heads of both countries.

The future of our countries hinges upon cooperation with neighboring countries, underlined Aliyev highlighting political and economic areas of cooperation in banking, investment, tourism, and transportation along with other arenas like regional and international communities and organizations.

Stressing on fight against terrorism as one of important areas of cooperation, Aliyev touched upon the trilateral meeting of Foreign Ministers of Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan and described it as a new chapter in Azerbaijan’s history of regional cooperation.
