Mahjub clinches gold at Austrian judo contest

TEHRAN, Feb. 15 (MNA) – Iran’s heavy-weight judo practitioner snatched a gold medal at Austria's European Open Judo Tournament taking a giant step towards Olympic qualification.

Competing at -100kg weight category, Javad Mahjub downed Arsen Omarov of Russia in the final match and won the gold medal.

He had struck an off draw in the first round while he opened his campaign with a win over Austrian Aaron Fara. Later, he overwhelmed Azerbaijan’s Jalil Shukurov before prevailing Italian Vincenzo D Arco in the semi-final finding his way to the finals of the event.

In the -81kg weight category, Iran’s Saeid Mollaei took a bronze medal after defeating his rival from Kazakhstan.

Overall, Iran's two-man team ranked third in Austria's European Open Judo Tournament.

The International Judo Federation sponsored games which were held aimed at clarifying the contestants in 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

Held in Oberwart of Austria, the tournament kicked off on Saturday February 13 in the presence of 242 judokas from 48 countries and ended on Sunday evening.
