EC calls for meeting on re-establishment of border controls

BRUSSELS, Jan. 06 (MNA) – The European Commission (EC) reported today that it called Sweden, Denmark and Germany to a meeting in this capital today to analyze the re-establishment of border controls by the two first, aimed at stemming refugees’ flow.

The Commissioner of Immigration and Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, will receive the ministers of those areas of the three nations to discuss the measures implemented in front of the crisis of undocumented immigrants and determine if they respect the laws of the block.

In addition, we will try to define coordinated efforts between those states.

On Monday Denmark stepped up security on the border with Germany, after Sweden took a similar decision and strengthen checks on their coasts. Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, explained that after the closure of Stockholm, 'there is a serious risk of illegal immigrants to stay in Denmark', so they will try to decrease the entry of those coming from Germany.

Copenhagen controls will be active for a period of 10 days, although the possibility of extension is still opened.

Lokke Rasmussen clarified that this does not mean an automatic rejection of applications for asylum, but a protectionist measure in response to the closing of Sweden.

At first glance, the measure seems to be in compliance with the rules of the Schengen Code of free movement, but we follow the situation closely.

This is a temporary law, but will be analyzed in depth, noted the community spokeswoman, Tove Ernts.

In 2015, more than a million refugees arrived in Europe in which is considered the worst migration crisis since the World War II (1939-1945).
