A total of 801 and 12000 candidates registered to stand for the fifth round of Assembly of Experts and tenth round of Parliament, respectively.
"The number of people who have registered for the February parliamentary election has increased by 65% in comparison to the previous election in 2011," Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said on Friday.
Tehran Governor General Seyed Hossein Hashemi pointed to the number of candidates, saying that the number of registered people for Assembly of Experts is over 10 times more than Tehran province's seats in the assembly.
The official said that number of registered candidates for the Parliament election increased by more than 60 percent compared to the previous elections.
Interior Ministry spokesman Hossein Ali Amiri also announced that the signup was extended following requests by related governors or governors-general.
Talking in a press conference at the Interior Ministry, Rahmani Fazli said about 30 candidates will compete for each seat at the parliament.
He also pointed to the rising number of women registered at the elections, saying that "the women’s registration has increased by 11 percent."
The 10th Parliament election and the 5th election of Assembly of Experts will be held on February 26, 2016 simultaneously.
