Larijani warns of spread of terrorism in ME

NEW YORK, Sep. 01 (MNA) – Iranian Parliament Speaker in meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned of the spread of terrorism in the region due to terrorists’ financial backing and lack of regional management.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani who is currently in New York to participate in the Fourth World Conference of Parliament Speakers convened by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in cooperation with the United Nations (UN) met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.

“The terrorists’ financial and arms resources on the one hand, and a serious mismanagement in the region on the other have driven the regional situation out of control,” said Larijani while warning about the spread of terrorism in Middle East.

Referring to the presence of terrorists in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, Larijani added “the anti-ISIL coalition has in practice made the ISIL terrorist group grow more insolent and the powerful countries have all failed to take any remarkable measure in fighting these terrorists.”

Larijani then highlighted the role of the United Nations in resolving the crisis in Yemen, adding that putting an end to the war and starting dialog for the formation of a government of national unity is the only solution to the Yemeni crisis; “the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to help for the realization of this important goal,” said Larijani.

The UN chief, for his part, expressed his satisfaction with the participation of Iran in the Fourth World Conference of Parliament Speakers, calling for a more active role from Iran in regional and international issues.

Ban Ki-moon deemed Iran’s role in fighting terrorism 'constructive’, adding “Iran and the UN can expand cooperation in countering terrorism and extremism."

On the ongoing war in Yemen he said, “the human situation in Yemen is severe and 80 percent of the people there, that is 21 million people, are in urgent need for help.”

The UN chief then called on Iran to intensify its efforts in resolving the crisis in Yemen.

Ban also described the nuclear agreement a great achievement for Iran and the UN, saying he would be visiting Iran in the near future.
