Larijani calls on IPU to send truth commission to Yemen

NEW YORK, Sep. 01 (MNA) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Larijani called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to send a truth commission to region to investigate ways to aid Yemeni people.

Ali Larijani made the remarks in his meeting with Saber Hossain Chowdhury, the chairman of the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on the sidelines of the Fourth World Conference of Parliament Speakers convened by IPU in cooperation with the United Nations, at the UN headquarters in New York.

Larijani deemed the role of the IPU in international developments highly significant and stressed the need for the further improvement of the union's capacities while encountering with the world’s various important issues.

He also added that Iran’s Parliament supports the strengthening of the IPU for meeting the interests of all nations as well as spreading peace and security in the world.  

The Iranian official then referred to the illegal military aggression against Yemen by the Saudi regime and the people’s urgent need for basic services and supplies, adding “the IPU should send a truth commission to this region and try to settle Yemeni people’s problems by investigating the ways to aid the war-stricken country.”

He also called on nuclear countries to use their wealth in the service of promoting humans welfare.

“The IPU must not play a passive role in the face of the spread of terrorism and extremism and during the military aggression of one country against a weaker one,” he said.  

The IPU head Saber Hossain Chowdhury, for his part, hailed the Islamic Republic’s constructive cooperation with the Union, adding “the IPU issued a statement of support for Iran and the 5+1 nuclear agreement and hopes for the Iranian nation to make great progress after having borne the brunt of sanctions.”

Chowdhury further deemed Iran as an active member of the IPU and called for the continuation of cooperation between the Islamic Republic’s Parliament and the Union in resolving regional crises.
