SRSG Kubiš voices concern over civilian casualties in Anbar strike

TEHRAN, Aug. 04 (MNA) – The special representative for Iraq expressed concern at reports that up to 40 civilians may have been killed and over 30 wounded in an airstrike in Rutba, west of Ramadi, on July 31.

According to the preliminary reports, three houses hosting internally displaced persons were hit in the alleged airstrike. Children were reportedly among the casualties.

“While this alleged incident remains under investigation, I take this opportunity to remind all parties to the conflict of their obligation to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians from the effects of attacks”, The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ján Kubiš said today in Baghadad.

The SRSG called on the Government of Iraq to investigate the incident, adding “it is necessary to ensure justice and accountability for violations and abuses, whenever they have taken place and by whomever they were perpetrated.”
