Iran produces running prosthesis for the disabled

TEHRAN, Dec. 24 (MNA) – An Iranian student of K.N.Toosi University of Technology in Tehran has produced a foot prosthesis specified for running.

Hadi Nowrouzian, the project manager, announced that the carbon prosthesis has been produced for the first time in the country and is specified for disabled runners who take part in athletic competitions.

Pointing that the prosthesis has been being produced in foreign countries for more than 20 years, he said Iran is an importer of foot prosthesis and the product has been imported with a price over $7,300 dollars, “producing this prosthesis would cut capital outflow from the country,” he added.

Nowrouzian stated that his project was inspired by Iran’s lack of representative in running competitions of Paralympics. “Last year, we produced a walking prosthesis and adding some features, the product is now an especial prosthesis for disabled runners,” he said.

He also asserted that the laboratorial example has been produced with a cost of some 735 dollars, “however, mass production will reduce the cost at least about six times.”

Nowrouzian, pointed to the necessity of supporting such projects and said “the prosthesis has been tested on the basis of advanced standards of this field and we can say that its performance is 99% close to the foreign samples.”

The foot prosthesis has been produced as an MA thesis project under the supervision and with cooperation of Prof. Mohammadreza Khalili.
