Iranian Researcher cuts x-ray harmful effects

TEHRAN, Nov. 09 (MNA) – Iranian researcher Mahmoud Haji Babaei has eliminated the harmful effects of x-ray in angiography and angioplasty

Mahmoud Haji Babaei, a member of Iran’s Inventors Association said to Mehr News that using X-ray in angiography and angioplasty operations led in some cases to risks and complications for the patients. “Therefore, by designing and manufacturing an advanced protective coating, the physician is immunized against the dangers of the radiation.”

In an interview with Mehr News, Mahmoud Haji Babaei said x-ray was a part of electromagnetic radiation and one of the energy demonstrations considered as a radiant energy.

“X-ray currently has an important place in many diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures, so that the most appropriate clinical diagnosis and subsequent appropriate treatments are not possible without using this method,” he added.

Member of Iran’s Inventors Association noted angiography as one of the diagnostic procedures in the field of cardiovascular diseases and said by this procedure it was possible to assess coronary anatomy and subsequently detect the lesion location and the appropriate treatment. “For example today, without coronary angiography, it is impossible to perform percutaneous intervention, including angioplasty or open heart surgery. However, on the other hand, x-ray exposure is dangerous to the organisms.”

“Applying x-ray in angiography and angioplasty operations imposes many side effects on a patient's genetics and body system”, Haji Babaei asserted, “after collision of X-ray with cells some physical effects such as ionizing heat and subsequent chemical and biological effects causing irreparable damage to living cells occur which depending on the severity, may include redness of the skin, minor burns, hair loss, bleeding, infertility, necrosis and cell death.

“Now physicians use apron coverage which contains 5/0 mm lead, during angiography or angioplasty for protection against x-ray,” Haji Babaei said emphasizing that the use of the cover has many disadvantages as well.

He developed a detailed plan for the protection against x-rays and said, this cover is like an ordinary apron and goes from the neck to the ankles and its length can be adjusted according to the height of the person.

Member of the UN World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said, two physicians often lead the operation at the time of angiography and the coating system is equipped with an audio receiving and playing system. During operation, the physician will see the patient's face and vice versa which increases the confidence and comfort in both sides. In this cover, both the physician and the patient can clearly see each other’s face.

He added that during surgery, in some cases, CPR may be required which must be applied immediately on the patient. In that case, the physician can perform cardiac massage without any limitation, with the apron worn, or quickly took cover off and practice CPR operation on the patient.
