TEHRAN, Nov. 23 (MNA) – A World Federation of Culture Collections report has said Iran ranks 4th in preservation of culturable collections.

Mehr News reported that the report said Iran with preserving more than 220 archaea strands ranked 4th in the world and 2nd in Asia, only second to Japan.

World Federation of Culture Collections was funded with the objectives of promote and support the establishment of microbial collections and relevant services and has worked to facilitate information networks among collections and users, providing improved access to microorganism collections data.

The Federation has different executive bodies and committees operating in biological diversity, education, risk assessment of collections, patent registering, postal regulations, quarantine, and safety, and according to statistics, Iran National Genetic and Biological Resource Center was among the first four countries worldwide, after Spain, Germany, and Japan, with 220 strands of archaea, majority of which are indigenous to Iran.

So far, 3 genii and 1 new indigenous archaea species, Haloarchaeobius iranensis, Halovenus aranensis Halopenitus persicus, Halopenitus malekzadehii, has been internationally registered and recognized.
