The potentials of the West Azarbaijan Province in different fields of handicrafts are unique, captivating every onlooker.
The province, home to various tribes and ethnic groups; is also neighbor to several countries and is one of the oldest centers of handicrafts productions, especially the wood works.
Wood statues, kilim, carpet, and textile works are among the traditional handicrafts of the region. Over 30 different kinds of handicrafts, each representing a special era and civilization, point to the rich civilizations of the region.
The handicrafts enjoy high status, here and abroad, participating in worldwide exhibitions. They include the wood works of intarsia, wood statues, and textile works of kilim, jajim and carpet.
“Rizehkari” is renowned, especially that of the city Urumieh. It includes the use of small pieces of wood in making different dishes like bowls and sugar bowls. Intarsia on wood makes use of varied colors of wood pieces from several trees. These trees have helped develop the industry in the region.
The everlasting art of carpet weaving has long been the only companion of the carpet weavers. The most famous designs of the province include “Riz Mahi” of Khoy, “Afshar Mahi” of Takab and “Seh Toranj” of Mahabad.
The textile works of the region are mostly seen in Kurd region of the province. The handicrafts of the region have benefited the tourism industry of the province as well, also helping to increase job opportunities.
The diversity of the handicrafts, simple and uncomplicated technology of the first medium has boosted the economy of the region. The high quality handicrafts and the low price have attracted the attention of many foreign countries especially Islamic countries.
The officials in charge of the handicrafts are making efforts toward the revival the old handicrafts of the province.
