Zionists Blocking Efforts to Establish WMD-Free Zone in Middle East

TEHRAN, July 5 (MNA) –- International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohamed ElBaradei is scheduled to visit Israel today along with an IAEA delegation to hold talks with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, and the Israel Atomic Energy Commission director general, Gideon Frank, and his senior aides.

ElBaradei is visiting the Zionist regime to discuss the dangers of proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. He will propose that Israel agree to begin talks for establishing a nuclear weapons-free zone in the region. The delegation is accompanied only by three news agency reporters.

ElBaradei has already urged Israel to dismantle all its nuclear weapons in order to create an atmosphere of tranquility in the Middle East. He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz in December that such weapons were not "an incentive for security". He also said Israel should sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He even warned that the belief that Israel was safer because it possessed such weapons was false since other Middle Eastern countries felt threatened by the Israeli nuclear arsenal.

"Frankly, I am not happy with the status quo, because I see a lot of frustration in the Middle East due to Israel's sitting on nuclear weapons or [its] nuclear weapons capability, while other parties in the Middle East are committed to the Non-Proliferation Treaty," he said.

Israel is widely believed to possess more than 200 nuclear warheads. The Zionist regime is the only Middle Eastern country which has nuclear weapons and is the main threat to regional and international security. The facts that Israel clandestinely developed and manufactured nuclear weapons and still refuses to sign the NPT are sufficient proof that the Zionist regime is the main threat in the region.

Israel implicitly contends that concern for its security was the main reason it manufactured weapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, which country has really threatened regional security? Which country has occupied other regional states’ territories and ignored UN Security Council resolutions? And which country is currently building an apartheid wall in order to annex Palestinian people’s land under the pretext of security concerns? Zionist regime officials should answer these questions.

It seems that Israeli officials will carry out any illegal action, from developing nuclear weapons and annexing other people’s land to assassinating anyone who opposes their policies, under the pretext of security concerns.

So, what are these security concerns? Would Israel still have security concerns if it observed UN resolutions? Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah once said that Israel could enjoy good relations with the Arab world if it withdrew from the occupied territories. Wouldn’t taking him up on this peace proposal solve the Middle East problem?

It is quite clear that the Zionists’ security concerns are just pretexts and it is Israel which has been threatening Middle Eastern states.

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that ElBaradei’s visit will be a success. For example, an Israeli newspaper reported that Tel Aviv wants ElBaraei’s visit to be kept out of the limelight. The newspaper also said that ElBaradei will not visit the Dimona nuclear reactor, since Israel refuses to allow international inspections of the plant.

Moreover, there is no determination to establish a WMD-free zone in the Middle East. The reason is clear: Tel Aviv enjoys the great powers’ indisputable support, most notably from its great mentor the United States. In a recent interview with the BBC, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw echoed the Israeli statements, saying Israel’s security concerns should be addressed in any plan for the Middle East.

So, we see that there is no real will to rid the region of weapons of mass destruction. Clearly, ElBaradei will not be able to implement his plan as long as there is no international determination to put pressure on Israel to scrap its nuclear arsenal.
