I want to set world record in Paris, Behdad Salimi says

Iran’s super heavyweight weightlifter Behdad Salimi said on Friday that he was going to set a new record at the World Weightlifting Championships in Paris.

“I want to win a gold medal in Paris as well as set a new world record in the event. I caught a cold last week but I am well-prepared now,” Salimi said.

“It’s not easy to set a new record and it depends on so many things but I promise to do my best to accomplish this task,” the 22-year-old added.

Salimi claimed a gold medal in the 2011 Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Tongling, China in April. He lifted 208kg in the snatch and 250kg in the clean and jerk. Salimi won the gold medal with a total of 458kg.

The World Weightlifting Championships, which gets underway in Paris, will determine who will be eligible to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
