'US citizens freed based on Islamic clemency, requests by foreign dignitaries'

TEHRAN, Sept. 22 (MNA) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday saying the two U.S. nationals were released from prison in Iran based on Islamic clemency and the requests made by the UN secretary general, senior officials of friendly countries including the Omani king, the Iraqi and Venezuelan presidents, as well as certain religious figures.

Two U.S. citizens Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal were released on Wednesday on bail of $500,000 each.

Sarah Shourd, Bauer, and Fattal with were arrested by border guards on July 31, 2009 after illegally entering Iran’s territory from Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The three were charged with illegal entry and espionage. Sarah Shourd was released from prison on bail on September 14, 2010.

On August 22, Bauer and Fattal were sentenced to three years in prison for illegal entry. They were also sentenced to five years in prison on charges of espionage for a U.S. intelligence agency.

The statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry also said it is necessary to remind that tens of Iranian citizens are being held in prison in the U.S. and other countries such as Britain under harsh conditions and are being denied of their basic rights.

It added, “The Iranian nation expects leading political and religious figures to leave no stone unturned to restore the basic rights of these innocent persons and (prepare the ground) for their release.”
