TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (MNA) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has granted clemency to 100 prisoners who were incarcerated either for taking part in the 2009 post-election unrest or for committing security-related offences, the Tehran prosecutor general announced late on Saturday.

"Based on an agreement of the Supreme Leader, 100 prisoners charged with security crimes have been granted clemency,” Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said.

Seventy of them were released on Saturday night, twelve others had their sentences commuted, and the other eighteen had their sentences suspended, Jafari Dolatabadi explained.

The Tehran prosecutor general said the prisoners had repented of their offences.

In a separate decree, Ayatollah Khamenei also ordered the release or commuted the sentences of 1,218 other convicts.

According to IRNA, the Leader made the decision upon a request by Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani.
