Literary critic Mohammad Hoquqi dies at 72

TEHRAN, June 30 (MNA) -- Iranian literary critic Mohammad Hoquqi died on June 29 in his hometown of Isfahan. He was 72.

He had been confined to a hospital bed since last Thursday, suffering from kidney failure and liver disease.

He will be buried in Isfahan cemetery on Wednesday and a ceremony in his commemoration is to be held in a mosque in Isfahan on Thursday. His relatives and friends will also be holding a ceremony in Tehran next week.

Hoquqi was a compiler, mostly focusing on contemporary poetry, and was especially interested in introducing people to Nima Yushij, the father of blank verse in Iran. He had collected all his studies and reviews in the book “Blank Verse from Beginning Until Today”, which reviewed poetry by a number of contemporary Iranian poets such as Ahmad Shamlu, Mehdi Akhavan-Salis, and Sohrab Sepehri.

“Thousand-Wing Cock” and “Angles and Circuits” are his other credits.

Hoquqi was born in 1937 in Isfahan. Hoquqi, Hushang Golshiri, Zia Movahhed, and Abolhassan Najafi were the driving force behind the magazine “Corpus of Isfahan”.

Author Hushang Golshiri said that his friend Hoquqi played a major role in helping to bring blank verse into the mainstream of contemporary Iranian literature.

Hoquqi’s old friend Abdolali Dastgheib also called his books the best source for research on Iran’s contemporary poetry.

Poet Ali Babachahi said he regards Hoquqi’s reviews as an analytical form of review and called him one of the most unique literary critics. He added that Hoquqi drew the attention of many poets to the structure and form of Iranian blank verse, which was initiated by Nima Yushij.
