7.2-magnitude earthquake jolts off eastern Indonesia

TEHRAN, Nov. 08 (MNA) – A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked off Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku on Wednesday, but did not trigger a tsunami, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency BMKG said.

Having centered at the shallow seabed, the earthquake occurred at 11:52 a.m. Jakarta time (0452 GMT).

The location of the epicenter was 251 km northwest of Maluku Tenggara Barat (Tanimbar Islands) district, with a depth of 10 km under the sea floor, Xinhua reported citing the agency.

The agency did not issue a tsunami warning as the tremors would not potentially trigger giant waves, the agency said.

Earlier, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences revised the magnitude of the earthquake it had reported to jolt the Banda Sea at 0453 GMT from 6.6 to 7.1.

The quake's epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 6.32 degrees south latitude and 129.59 degrees east longitude, it said.
