Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi stated that following extensive intelligence operations, the border guards of Sistan and Baluchistan Province in southeast Iran identified some drug smugglers who were planning to transport a large consignment of narcotics to the country.
Two smugglers have been arrested in this regard during the operations, in addition to the confiscation of 2.373 tons of illicit drugs, including 1.672 tons of opium and 754 kgs of crystal, the commander noted.
According to Goudarzi, two cars, 1 transit truck, and 4 motorcycles were also seized in the operations.
Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.
The country is at the forefront of the fight against drug trafficking and thousands of Iranian forces have been so far martyred to protect the world from the danger of drugs. Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trafficking over the past decades.
