Iran Welcomes Signing of Protocol on Return of Nuclear Waste: IAEO Spokesman

TEHRAN, August 25 (Mehr News Agency)-- “Iran welcomes the signing of a separate protocol agreement in which Tehran agrees to return all spent nuclear fuel to Russia for reprocessing,” Iranian Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) spokesman Saber Zaimian said here Monday.

He added that since keeping the spent nuclear fuel would require additional expenditure to protect the environment, it was agreed that the nuclear waste would be returned in the previous nuclear cooperation agreements with Russia.

Referring to Iran's first nuclear power station at Bushehr, the Iranian atomic energy official added, "Russia is pressing ahead with construction of the Bushehr nuclear reactor and the power plant will become operational according to the scheduled timetable.”
