ACC keen to develop cricket in Iran

TEHRAN, Dec. 5 (MNA) – The Asian Cricket Council is eager to promote the sporting field in Iran, said the ACC’s Pakistani development officer Iqbal Sikander here Monday.

The 1992 World Cup-winning Sikander, who talked in an exclusive with the Tehran Times, voiced the ACC’s readiness to make investment in Iran and give the country all requirements.

“If the new government of Iran supports and provides the ACC with a plot of land for preparing some cricket grounds, the council will do its best to render all needed services ranging from equipment to training courses.”

Hossein-Ali Salimian, chief of Iran’s Cricket Committee, who accompanied the ACC official, said Iran became a member of the Asian body in 2003 and participated in different ACC-sponsored tournaments, including the under-19 cup held in Nepal last November.

According to Salimian, Iran will compete in the 2006 men’s event, Middle East Cup, in Kuwait in February.

He added the ACC held umpire training courses here last Oct. and three women got their certificates, the first in the Mideast.

The official said, “Cricket will be rapidly promoted in the country in case the government and Ministry of Education support.”
