Iran calls on US to lift sanctions on foodstuff, medicine

TEHRAN, Nov. 23 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi has called on the United States to comply with ICJ ruling and lift sanctions on humanitarian goods, and medicines.

According to Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Thursday, Bahram Ghasemi hailed the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s order in early October, which called on the United States to lift its sanctions against Iran linked to civil aviation, humanitarian goods, and medicines, as a victory for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Ghasemi pointed out that the victory was achieved through the efforts of Iranian diplomats and legal experts.

The foreign ministry spokesman stressed the need for using the capacity of the ICJ, which provides legal tools to force the United States to lift the sanctions and create a breathing space for medicine and foodstuff.

He stressed the need for the United States to lift the sanctions on foodstuff and medicine.

He pointed out that the United States is pursuing an absolutely unilateral policy which can be seen in its withdrawal from international agreements such as the Paris climate agreement, adding the US is seeking to withdraw from 1955 treaty of amity with Iran but the ICJ believes that the US action would be in violation of the treaty.

Ghasemi further noted that the amity treaty will be valid for a year after the US withdrawal.

He went on to note that the ICJ would be to the advantage of Iran as it is the highest UN body in the world in legal cases.

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman further said that the ICJ proved its jurisdiction and acted properly in favor of Iran despite the US pressures.
