Iran in dire need of water management: minister

TEHRAN, Nov. 8 (MNA) -– Iran is a semiarid country with great need to utilize and control all its water resources. It is an imperative and sensitive matter to establish a systematic water management planning to satisfy the present demand and that of future. “Even the countries that enjoy plenty of resources do so with methodical preservation and conservation,” Minister of Energy Seyyed Parviz Fattah stated on Tuesday in the 7th New Technologies Exhibition.

“Underground water resources, in the past, used to be considered the safest of all water sources; however, penetration of urban and industrial wastewater has reduced its quality significantly,” the minister said, adding, “We could reach underground wells by digging only 50 meters in some regions not long ago, whereas, nowadays, this requires 500 meters of probing deep into the soil.”

It is projected that the country is going to consume more water and electricity this year than what it was anticipated before. Establishing sewage systems and refineries is a key solution for both water recycling and using the residues for production of energy and fertilizer.

Inauguration of the water treatment plant in southern Tehran, at the end of the next year, is a small but promising step toward a sound water management policy, he said in conclusion.
