Iranian play goes to Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival

TEHRAN, Jul. 29 (MNA) – ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Mostafa Koushki’s re-envisioning of Shakespeare’s comedy, will take part in 22nd Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival in Poland, as one of the biggest and most well-known festivals in Europe dedicated to the English playwright.

After 163 performances and successful participation at Fajr International Theater Festival, Mostafa Koushki’s adaption of William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ will now take part in the 22nd edition of Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival in Poland.

According to the director, the method of performance was based on magic and the concept of circus.

“The fantasy world of the play dominates the stage and costume designs, music and acting of the play, helping us to perform the world of jennies, fairies and Athenians,” Koushki said about his play.

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is Sheakespeare’s comedic and dreamlike play written in 1595, which centers around the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Meanwhile, a courtier seeks the Duke's intervention because his daughter, Hermia, will not agree to his choice of Demetrius as a husband, since she's in love with Lysander.

The actors and actresses (in order of appearance) include Azin Nazari, Mohammad-Sadegh Malek, Sajjad Bagheri, Ghazal Shojaei, Amir Mehdi Zhouleh, Shahrouz Del Afkar, Nazafarin Kazemi, Mostafa Koushki and Alireza Keimanesh.

First organized in 1993, Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival is held annually during the first week of August, and is considered as one of the biggest and most well-known festivals in Europe dedicated to the English playwright.
