Europe urged to threaten US to comply with JCPOA

TEHRAN, Apr. 14 (MNA) – Steven Blockmans a senior member of Europe Policy Studies Research Center said on Friday that EU should threaten US to stick by Iran’s nuclear deal.”

He went on to say that Europe must threaten Washington in the World Trade Organization (WTO) more than ever in order to live up to its commitments in this important international deal.

He pointed to the possibility of US retaliation against European countries, he added, “European Union must provide a counter-system to compensate for the losses that these companies will suffer in the United States.”

European countries can learn from the past well and take a common strategic interest and protect their outstanding diplomatic achievement and finally, adopt an equal position independent from the US, he emphasized.

He is of the opinion that Europe needs to be accompanied with China and Russia as well as other countries that respect implementation of Iran’s nuclear deal dubbed “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action”.

If the EU and P5+1 succeed in persuading Tehran to live up to its commitments in the field of JCPOA, this important international deal will have the chance of survival, he maintained.

To conclude his remarks, he said, “US President Donald Trump is scheduled to decide whether to stay on JCPOA or not on May 22. If the US government decides to withdraw from this agreement, Tehran will have several options including continuation of enriching uranium with high percentage and/or continue implementation of JCPOA with countries of China, Russia and Europe.”
