In a meeting with Australian Ambassador Gregory Lawrence Moriaty, Tavakoli said that Iran is prepared to face the consequences of developing nuclear technology.
He went on to say that the Islamic Republic does not seek to produce nuclear weapons, but added that the West’s pressure on Iran may have repercussions for both sides.
Tavakoli said that Iran’s stance toward the Iraq and Afghanistan crises and other regional developments is quite logical and called on European countries to face the realities on the ground.
For his part, the Australian ambassador underlined Iran’s right to make use of civilian nuclear technology within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and said that Australia recognizes Iran’s right to access nuclear technology.
However, Moriaty noted that Iran should continue its confidence-building measures with the European Union.
He also called the Islamic Republic a major power in the Middle East and said that Australia believes that Iran is a key player in regional developments and has the competence to lead the region.
