China urges US to Remove THAAD from S Korea

TEHRAN, Oct. 13 (MNA) – China wants South Korea to end its deployment of US ballistic missiles systems, which undermine Chinese and Russian security, a senior officer with the Chinese Defense Ministry’s Central Military Commission has said.

Amid the mounting tensions over Pyongyang's ongoing nuclear program, South Korea made the decision to install the four remaining THAAD launchers, causing concern in Moscow and Beijing, since this move could deteriorate the situation in the region.

"The deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems to the Republic of Korea is a serious blow to the strategic interests of China, Russia and other countries," Lt. Gen. Zhou Shangping said, reported Sputnik.

The statement was circulated by the ministry on the heels of a Russian-Chinese military meeting on THAAD on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, which deals with international security.

China asked the United States and South Korea to "take the concerns of China and other countries in the region seriously, reverse their erroneous decision and remove the equipment."

South Korea brought in the final units of the THAAD missile defense system in early September after North Korea launched several missiles and conducted a sixth nuclear test in the past months.
