EU mission to discuss Iran nuclear deal with US senators

TEHRAN, Oct. 05 (MNA) – Ambassadors of EU nations in Washington confirmed Wednesday they planned to meet with US senators in a bid to shore up support for a continued nuclear deal with Iran.

"Yes, correct," a diplomat in the EU mission told the RIA Novosti news agency after reports surfaced that a meeting was due later on Wednesday.

Ambassadors from the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the top EU diplomat in Washington were going to join senators on Capitol Hill for talks organized by Democrat Richard Durbin, according to Reuters.

US President Donald Trump speaks to the press with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (L) and Defense Secretary James Mattis (R) as he meets with his Cabinet in the Cabinet Room at the White House in Washington, DC.

US media reported last month that President Donald Trump was leaning toward scrapping the 2015 six-party deal with Tehran that scaled down its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief. The US administration is expected to make a decision by October 15.

Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that there was no necessity to re-negotiate the Iran nuclear deal which may have prevented a military intervention.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran will withdraw from the deal in case the United States undertakes a similar step.
