Iran committed to help end tensions in Syria

TEHRAN, Feb. 16 (MNA) – Deputy-FM Jaberi Ansari has reiterated territorial integrity, national sovereignty and the right of self-determination for the people as principles of the solution to Syrian crisis.

Mr. Hossein Jaberi Ansari heads Iranian delegation to Astana where the hopes of many ordinary Syrians lie; the Astana Process has achieved, as Mr. Jaberi Ansari also emphasizes, considerable success on the ground in restoring hopes to the construction of the country along with bringing opposition factions into negotiation tables as parties to the Syrian crisis:

In the Name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful

Mr. Chairman, Excellencies,

Distinguished Heads and Members of the participating Delegations,

Ladies and Gentlemen

At the outset, I would like to express my gratitude to the State of Kazakhstan for its hospitality and continued support for Astana initiative.

Since the first International Meeting on Syria on January 23-24, 2017 in Astana, we have made significant achievements in containing the Syrian crisis. In recent weeks and days, some intensive expert discussions were held among the delegations of the three Guarantor-States to finalize the working regulations for the Joint Group to monitor the ceasefire. Violations have decreased in number, thousands of people have returned to their home cities, including Aleppo, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, alongside the international community, has succeeded in providing further humanitarian assistance to Syrian citizens. In some areas, including Aleppo, urban reconstruction has started and the Syrian people has embraced an unprecedented hope to see the end of the current crisis.

Efforts made by Iran, Russia and Turkey are not and were not to substitute the previous international efforts; rather, they are a complement with added values. Astana Process, due to efforts made by the three countries, has taken the first steps to resolve the crisis, but we need further determination and endeavor to complete it.

Distinguished audience;

The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to help end tensions in Syria and believes that the most important mission of the Astana Meeting is to facilitate intra-Syrian negotiations to the end of establishing peace and security in this country. The UN plays an important role in achieving this goal.

We emphasize our principles, including the Syrian territorial integrity, national sovereignty and the right of self-determination for the people of Syria. The Islamic Republic of Iran invites all Syrian groups to engage in peaceful negotiations and get hold of their children’s future.

Women and children who have suffered the severest consequences of Syrian crisis in recent years, living violence and bloodshed, have pinned their hopes on our mutual efforts to see the outcomes of Astana Process.

Thank you for your attention.
