DC film critics choose ‘Elle’ over Iran’s ‘The Salesman’

TEHRAN, Dec. 06 (MNA) – The Washington DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) that had nominated Farhadi’s ‘The Salesman’ for Best Foreign Language Film, gave the award to Dutch psychological thriller ‘Elle’.

The Washington, DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) announced their top honorees for 2016 on December 5, where Iranian drama feature The Salesman by Asghar Farhadi lost to Paul Verhoeven's psychological thriller ‘Elle’ for the Best Foreign Language Film.

La La Land by Damien Chazelle won the Best Original Screenplay prize, Best Original Score and  Best Cinematography, while Best Actor went to Casey Affleck for family drama Manchester by the Sea. Natalie Portman took home Best Actress for Jackie directed by Pablo Larraín.

While Asghar Farhadi’s Cannes award-winner drama The Salesman lost the award to Elle for WAFCA’s Best Foreign Language Film, it managed to win the US National Board of Review award, which brought the film one step closer to winning the 2017 Oscar.

Founded in 2002, The Washington DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) comprises professional DC-based film critics with affiliations in television, radio, print and the internet. As of 2016, WAFCA has grown to include 50 dedicated members from the District, Maryland and Virginia.
