‘Starless Dreams’ seeking fame in Belgium’ Festival des Libertés

TEHRAN, Oct. 25 (MNA) – Mehrdad Oskouei’s award-winning and much admired ‘Starless Dreams’ has sought its odds of success this time in a Belgian film festival oddly called ‘Inconvenient.’

“Space for artistic communication, demands and artistic creations, the Festival des Libertés is the globalized expression of our permanent action defending the rights, liberties and values of universal democracy. As a political and cultural event, it offers documentaries, debates and talks, concerts, theater and exhibitions to a large audience. A symbol of the observation post of the current state of rights and liberties around the world, the Festival des Libertés is a place where democratic struggles are given a voice and converge,” writes the official website of the festival, to be held October 26-29 in Brussels.

The current edition of the festival hosts 28 movies in competitive section, where Oskuei’s documentary will compete for trophies.

‘Starless Dreams’ had quite recently participated in Lithuania’s Inconvenient Films, October 13-November 8. The 10th edition of Inconvenient Films specializes in human rights themes. Iran’s second representative to Inconvenient Films is Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami’s ‘Sonita’ participating in first and second direction films.

“‘Sonita’ follows the life of an Afghan refugee in Tehran. She dreams of becoming a famous rapper, but her mother and brother have other plans – to sell her into marriage in Afghanistan. So the 40-year-old director steps in, giving the family cash to delay the marriage. At first reluctantly and then with single-minded determination, Ghaem Maghami directs her subject to safety. By the end, Sonita Alizadeh has travelled to Afghanistan and on to the US to take up a scholarship, without her family’s permission,” wrote a Guardian feature report of the film.
