Nearly 3,000 migrants die in Mediterranean in six months

GENEVA, Aug. 24 (MNA) – In the first half of 2016, 2,901 migrants died or disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea, while trying to reach European shores, an official report announced.

A report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released this Tuesday, states that this figure represents an increase of 37 percent over the same period last year, which in the opinion of experts shows that the refugee crisis in Europe is worsening.

Most of the deaths occurred in the Central Mediterranean, which more than 70,000 people tried to reach from the north coast of Africa, of which 2, 484 perished in the attempt.

The research, conducted by the Center for Data Analysis on Global Migration (GMDAC), of the IOM showed, however, a notable decrease in the loss of human lives in the Eastern Mediterranean region, from Turkey to Greece by the Aegean Sea, with only 376 cases.

Starting from the migration agreement signed in late March between the European Union and Turkey, to return migrants that arrive on Greek territory to the country, a reduction of 98 percent was achieved in the use of the route, in relation to 2015,when 885,000 people used it.
