Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who arrived in the Ghanaian capital Accra on Monday as the second leg of his West African tour, held talks with President John Dramani Mahama, where the two sides underscored the good level of bilateral cooperation and multilateral cooperation in international organizations and communities.
“We are also ready to assist Ghana in combating terrorism and extremism,” Zarif said.
Zarif, who was accompanied by 38 managers of economic firms, went on to add, “the business delegation with me is one of the largest ever in the past few years and they are ready to expand cooperation with Ghana in all areas.”
President Mahama, for his part, mentioned his visit to Iran following the nuclear agreement, saying the visit had yielded positive results.
“Iran’s participation in our various projects, in particular the medical field and establishing Red Crescent clinics have been very constructive for Ghana,” he added.
President Mahama further thanked Iran for granting scholarships to Ghanaian students.
The two sides also conferred on the current regional issues, where the Ghanaian President stressed the position of his country toward the Syrian crisis as similar to Iran’s; “no military approach will be able to settle the war in Syria; we fully back political measures,” he said.
Foreign Minister Zarif launched his tour on Sunday with an aim to expand political and economic relations with West African countries. Following his visit to Nigeria and Ghana, Zarif departed for Guinea Conakry Tuesday night and is scheduled to visit Mali next as the last leg of his tour.
