Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), made the remark on Saturday, shortly after a session held by the SNSC on the latest developments in Turkey, following the Friday's attempted coup in the Eurasian country.
“Iran’s position on these incidents is always based on respect for people’s choices rather than forcible dominance,” Shamkhani said, explaining, “that is, our perpetual position toward governmental structures is the rejection of coup d'etat and affirmation of governments based on people’s real votes.”
Shamkhani went on to add that the position is not only true about Turkey, adding “our reason for being in Syria is the same in which we prioritize people’s votes over tribal and hereditary governments.”
"Although all aspects of the attempted coup in Turkey has yet to be discovered, certainly the people are the ultimate winners in this scenario," he stressed.
He further reaffirmed, "we support the legitimate government of Turkey and are against any kind of coup, whether it is internal or supported by foreign sides."
Shamkhani maintained that what contributed to the conclusion of Friday's developments in Turkey was the participation of the people and political parties who took to the streets to condemn the coup.
He further ensured that Iran's northwestern borders with Turkey are completely secure and the ground and air forces are ready to protect the Iranian soil; "there is no reason for concern,” Shamkhani underlined.
The SNSC head denounced any form of military action for gaining political dominance, saying the coup is inconsistent with the real demands of the people.
