The review on Hamidreza Ghorbani’s ‘A House on 41st Street’, about the disintegration of a middle-class family over a murder committed by brother due to a bounced check, notes the slow progress of the drama into a ‘complex psychological and moral territory’.
The review, written by Deborah Young, praises the second part of the film where the ‘knots tighten and the tension lifts the film above standard drama’, and hails the strong female cast comprising Mahnaz Afshar, Soheila Razavi, and Sara Bahrami.
The review extends its appreciation for the performance to the whole cast, but notes that Ali Mosaffa (who played the husband in Asghar Farhadi’s The Past) plays a rather subdued role in a thankless supporting role.
It goes on to add that the ‘nervous, fast-moving camerawork gives the story impetus.’
‘A House on 41st Street’ is a 2015 production directed by Hamidreza Ghorbani, produced by Seyyed Mahmoud Razavi and written by Azita Iraie. The film participated in Cannes Film Market 2016.
