Attracting 239 athletes from 31 countries, the 22nd round of Asian Taekwondo Championships was pursued on Tuesday with the Iranian squad receiving 2 gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
Armin Hadipour struck an off draw in the first round while he overcame Indian (6-0), Taiwan (5-4) and Kazakhstan (7-1) rivals in the march to the final encounter where he defeated the Thai athlete to win Iran’s first ever gold medal in the minus 54kg weight category.
Mirhashem Hosseini also defeated all his rivals in a row on road to the finals where he subdued the Mongolian taekwondoka 8-6 and claimed the Asian title.
Competing in -63kg section, Abolfazl Yaghubi conceded a defeat against the South Korean fighter in the final combat standing on the second podium though he had previously downed Qatari, Yemeni and Thai rivals.
Also in women’s event, Iran’s Nahid Kiani snatched a bronze medal on the second day of the tournament.
Given Melika Mirhosseini’s bronze medal on Monday, the Iranian outfit has so far secured five colorful medals including two golds.
The 2016 Asian Taekwondo Championships are the 22nd edition of the Asian Taekwondo Championships, which kicked off at the Marriott Convention Center Grand Ballroom in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 18 and will come to an end today on April 20.
