Official discusses key points in Syria ceasefire

TEHRAN, Mar. 07 (MNA) – Iranian Deputy FM Amir Abdollahian on Sun. discussed various key points in Syria ceasefire, saying the truce will give the Syrian Army an edge and strengthen the political process of the developments in the country.

Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs, in a National Security and Foreign Policy Commission meeting on Sunday, discussed the various key points in Syria ceasefire, saying “the first point is that various groups will announce their positions to three bases in Jordan as controlled by the Americans, Lattakia as controlled by the Russians and Geneva as run by members of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), and have their positions declared as green. This will help identifying the position and capacities of parties to the conflict.”

“The second point is that ceasefire will allow the Syrian Army a chance to breathe,” he continued. “The Army has been involved in war for years and must have been exhausted by the vicissitudes of war.”

He went on to add, “the third point is that the ceasefire will also allow the opposition groups a chance to re-invigorate.”

“Ceasefire will strengthen the political process of developments in Syria,” said Amir Abdollahian of the fourth key point, “that is, diplomacy will be allowed a chance to direct Syrian developments in the absence of war.”

“The fifth point is the possibility of dispatching humanitarian aid to a larger number of people who have been struggling with issues in the course of the Syrian war. The Syrian nation are currently living under one of the worst human conditions,” he said.

The Iranian diplomat then referred to the political talks in Geneva as a result of ceasefire in Syria, saying “the talks are scheduled to be held in the future but the preparations have begun through bilateral and multilateral consultations. The aim of Geneva talks is to determine the members of the transitional government.”

“The US is still persisting on overthrowing Assad,” he said. “Russia has not expressed any doubt about the position of Assad so far. Turkey which seems to have lost its edge in Syria, is now backing Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the US in a bid to upset the conditions for the Syrian President.”

“Iran, however, insists on sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and deems the origin of any political change in Syria in its citizens’ peaceful demands," he stressed.
