Denmark announces intentions to reestablish border control

BRUSSELS, Dec. 16 (MNA) – Denmark reported to the European Commission (EC) its intention to reestablish the control at the border with Germany as a response to the decision by Sweden to increase control at its border areas, a community spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Amid a migratory crisis, considered the worst since World War II, Copenhagen fear that the measured adopted by Stockholm causes an increase of the wave of undocumented immigrants entering its territory. Thus, it is assessing the possibility to do the same and protect its borders, starting in 2016.

According to EC Interior and Immigration Affairs spokeswoman Tove Ernst, the community's Executive received information on Monday, telling about a possible reestablishment of controls, but it is not an official notification yet.

She added that in case of making the formal request a reality, the entity would assess it from the perspective of need and proportionality, as it did in other cases.

Apparently, Copenhagen would only make its request official if after the reestablishment of Swedish controls, it confirms an increase in the arrivals in Danish territory.
