Iran content with results of Myanmar successful election

TEHRAN, Nov. 12 (MNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari said the Islamic Republic is happy about the result of Myanmar’s successfully-held elections, deeming it an important step toward political and civil development in that country.

Hossein Jaber Ansari, Iran’s newly-appointed Foreing Ministry Spokesperson, told reporters on Thursday that the massive participation of different groups of Myanmarian people in the elections shows their deep interest in the future of their country and their hopes for increasing prosperity through pursuing peaceful approaches and practicing a political maturity among all parties involved.

The Iranian official also expressed hope that the results of the election would further increase national unity and improve relations between the government and its people, setting the stage for the active participation of all groups, including differing ethnicities and minorities, in the development of the Southeast Asian country.

The 70-year-old Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi won a stunning victory with her National League for Democracy Party (NLD), obtaining up to 90 percent of votes in last Sunday's election in Myanmar.

The country has been ruled by the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) since 2011.
