Attacks in Ankara leave dozens dead

ANKARA, Oct. 11 (MNA) - Twin explosions outside the main train station in the Turkish capital Ankara killed at least 95 people during a peaceful demonstration against the conflict between the Turkish army and Kurdish militia.

Turkish Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu said that out of these people, 62 died immediately at the scene of the blasts.

The panic and disorder generated by the explosions among those attending the peaceful demonstration could contribute to increased fatal victims, said the minister, quoted by the online edition of the newspaper Hurriyet Daily News.

Also, the Turkish Interior Minister Selami Attinok denied his intention to quit due to the deadly event.

Attinok said he had confidential information on the blasts, but declined to discuss about it for intelligence considerations.

Although up to this moment no official source refers to an attack, witnesses indicated that people were left scattered everywhere, so is suspected the involvement of suicidal.

The peaceful protest was organized, among others, by the Popular Democratic Party (HDP), advocate of the Kurdish cause and responsible for the loss of the parliamentary majority of the ruling Justice and Development Party in the elections of June 7.

The HDP eventually became one of the main partners in peace negotiations initiated in 2013 between the government and the Workers Party of Kurdistan, which allowed it to enter the legislature with 12 percent of the votes.
