Education Minister Marta Lafuente had no choice but accepting the proposal to discuss the claims of the students, who proved yesterday their power of organization and achieved the establishment of a negotiation table, set for next Tuesday.
Thousands of students from public and private schools, which represents a historic union in the country, along with university students, teachers and families, demonstrated across the streets of the capital city in an impressive but disciplined gathering, amid loud songs and slogans.
Their claims ranged from improving the quality of education to condemn the prevailing corruption in this and other sectors, reject the misguided official policies and ask the Government to meet the commitments made and never fulfilled.
Within the governmental commitments were the proper and general supply of school snack, the improved infrastructure of educational centers and a ticket for all students to pay half fare on the public transport system.
The Paraguayan media covered at length this demonstration, even compared with the logical difference in its significance and duration, to the extensive coverage of Pope Francis' visit to Paraguay in July.
