Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was sitting in a session with the UN’s Swedish special envoy to Syrian crisis Staffan De Mistura, who is in a tour of the region to exchange and elicit opinions of countries about Syrian crisis. Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Islamic Republic of Iran’s ‘clear and principled’ position on supporting Syrian nation and government and accused parties of ‘seeking political advantages,’ whom he described as ‘providing logistical support and arms to Syrian opposition fighters;’ “now, it is too clear for all players in Syria that the crisis is mainly of a political nature,” Amir-Abdollahian added, expressing gratitude for Mr. De Mistura’s good offices in search of a political solution to Syrian crisis.
“We do believe reforms as a necessity for country torn with violence and political turmoil; however, we would absolutely reject any attempt to change the status quo in Syria, and believe that any reform should be democratic and carried out by Syrians themselves,” Mr. Amir-Abdollahian asserted. “Today, terrorist fighters confront Assad’s government under different titles, and the Islamic Republic of Iran helps Syria and other countries suffering the plight of terrorism with fighting it.”
Deputy-minister for Arab and African Affairs pointed to a four-point plan proposed by Mr. Zarif which sought to highlight the serious and indiscriminate fighting against terrorism.
Mr. De Mistura discredited military option as a solution to the Syrian crisis amid escalating terrorist activities, while emphasizing on a political measure to solve crisis in Syria.
He also said that recognizing Syria’s territorial integrity, withdrawal of armed fighting opposition factions, and respect for all political spectra in Syria as pivots of any political solution; he emphasized on Geneva sessions on Syrian crisis as bringing good results, and dubbed crucial the collective attempts by influential players in Syria especially Islamic Republic of Iran.
