Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told IRIB on Tuesday that Iran’s plan for Syrian crisis was handed to President Assad during the visit made by Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif in last month.
The top diplomat recounted that Assad welcomed the plan and hailed Iran’s efforts for solving the problem in the Arab nation.
"We agreed upon the principal parts of the plan, but about the details we have scheduled to hold meetings with a team from Syria’s Foreign Ministry," said the senior Iranian official.
Elaborating on the political plan offered by Iran, Amir-Abdollahian pointed to the focus on the democratic role of Syrians, prevention of any power vacuum in the political system of Syria, fight against terrorism, provision of help for dislocated and refugees, and the dispatch of humanitarian reliefs as the main features of the proposal.
"We hold it complementary to the UN plan, and consulting with Secretary-General of the United Nations and his special envoy to Syria, we intend to pave the way for implementing the plan."
According to Amir-Abdollahian, what was important for Iran was to let the people decide for their country and Iran’s plan would output a safe and secure Syria with a democracy to steer the country’s future.
The Iranian diplomat concluded that the proposal gives voice to oppositions but not the terrorists.
Rejecting the claim that Iran has conceded its standpoints about Syria, the official reiterated that Iran seeks a realistic political solution based on democracy without a power vacuum.
Backing Assad, Amir-Abdollahian attached an important role to him as a unifying figure standing in face of terrorism.
We continue our support for the Syrian government and people, as it has always been the Islamic Republic’s approach, to help them conquer terrorism, and find a political solution for their problem, with stress on the positive and constructive role of important regional and cross-regional players.
