NAM slams NPT states on cooperating with Israel

NEW YORK, May 06 (MNA) – Speaking at the NPT review conference today, Iran’s UN envoy has criticized some nuclear states for extending their cooperation to non-NPT parties, particularly Israel.

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative in International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi delivered a speech at the third session of the NPT review conference in New York and on behalf of the 120 NAM member states.

Referring to the article 4 of the NPT, Najafi stressed that all parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) have the right to enjoy full and maximum benefits from nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, urging the NPT member states to stay committed to their obligations related to the Article 4 of the Treaty in order to help the yet non-nuclear states in their nuclear developments. In this regard, NAM has called on the export control regimes to lift their illegal restrictions on the transport of nuclear equipment, material and technology for peaceful purposes as soon as possible.

While criticizing some nuclear countries for their cooperation with the non-NPT states, NAM urged an immediate halt to all nuclear cooperation with the non-members particularly Israel, noting the IAEA must extend its nuclear cooperation only to those having joined the Agency’s Comprehensive Safeguards System and the Treaty.

NAM strongly condemned the imposition of a number of politically-charged restrictions against NPT states, deeming it in line with the exertion of pressure on developing countries that are aiming to obtain nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

At the end of the statement, NAM presented 19 special offers for the facilitation of rights of the parties to the Treaty to development, research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

The ninth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was launched on April 27 and will run until 22 May 2015 at UN Headquarters in New York.
